PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

Indications

  • Treatment of acute diarrhea in children over 2 years of age in addition to oral rehydration and in adults.
  • Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhea in adults.
  • Symptomatic treatment of pain related to functional intestinal diseases in adult.

Dosage

  • Treatment of acute diarrhea:
    + In children over 2 years: 4 sachets per day for 3 days then 2 sachets per day for 4 days.
    + In adults: On average 3 sachets per day for 7 days. In practice, the daily dosage can be doubled at the start of treatment.
  • Other indications :
    In adults: On average 9 grams (3 sachets) per day.

Usage

  • Administered orally.
  • The contents of the sachet should be suspended just before use.
  • In children, the contents of the sachet can be diluted in a 50 ml bottle of water to be distributed during the day, or mixed with a semi-liquid food: Broth, compote, puree, “potty” …
  • In adults, the contents of the sachet can be diluted in a half glass of water.
  • Known hypersensitivity to any ingredients in the formula.
  • Acute diarrhoea with severe dehydration and electrolyte depletion in children.
  • Very rare cases of appearance or aggravation of constipation have been reported. Treatment may be continued with decreasing the dose.
  • Diosmectite should be used with caution in patients with a history of severe chronic constipation.
  • In infants and children under 2 years of age, the use of diosmectite should be avoided. The gold standard treatment for acute diarrhea is oral rehydration solution (ORS).
  • In children over 2 years of age, treatment for acute diarrhea should be done in combination with early administration of an oral rehydration solution (ORS) to avoid dehydration. Chronic use of diosmectite should be avoided.
  • In adults, the treatment does not exempt from rehydration if this proves necessary.
  • The extent of rehydration by oral rehydration solution or intravenously must be adapted according to the intensity of the diarrhea, the age and the peculiarities of the patient.
  • The patient should be informed of the need to:
    + Rehydrate with abundant drinks, salty or sweet, to compensate for the loss of fluid due to diarrhea (the average daily ration of water for adults is 2 liters);
    + To maintain the food during the diarrhea:
    ▪ Excluding certain intakes and particularly raw vegetables, fruits, green vegetables, spicy dishes as well as frozen foods or drinks.
    ▪ Favoring grilled meats and rice.
  • Smetstad contains glucose. Patients with rare glucose-galactose malabsorption should not take this medicine.
  • Diosmectite is not recommended during pregnancy and lactation.
