Furosemide is a sulfonamide-derived diuretic, belongs to a class of compounds that have strong, rapid, dosage-dependent effect. Diuretic effects of drug are strong, lead to lower blood pressure, but often weak.

PRESCRIBING INFORMATION

Indications:

  • Acute pulmonary oedema; oedema associated with heart, liver, kidneys and other kinds of oedema.
  • Hypertension due to kidney damage.
  • Hypercalcemia.

Dosage:

  • Oedema: The usual initial daily dose is 40 mg. Adjust dose if necessary, depending on patients’ response. In cases of mild oedema, 20 mg daily or 40 mg on alternative days may be used. In some cases, the daily dose may be increased to 80 mg or more, given as a single dose or in 2 divided doses. In severe cases, the dose may be gradually titrated up to 600 mg/day.
  • For children, the usual oral dose ranges from 1 – 3 mg/kg/day up to a maximum dose of 40 mg/day.
  • Hypertension: Oral dose is 40 – 80 mg/day, combine with other antihypertensive agents to treat hypertension in patients with kidney damage.
  • Hypercalcemia: 120 mg/day, given as a single dose or in 2 or 3 divided sub-doses.

Usage:

  • Furosemide STELLA 40 mg is administered orally.
  • Hypersensitivity to furosemide and the sulfonamide derivatives, such as sulfamide antidiabetics.
  • Hepatic pre-coma and coma state.
  • Anuria or renal failure due to drug cause toxicity to kidneys or liver.
  • Hypovolaemia in case of high-dose therapy, orthostatic hypotension.
  • Hypokalemia, hyponatraemia, hypocalcemia, hypomagnesemia, hyperuricaemia, hypochloraemic alkalosis.
  • It should be used with care in patients with prostatic hyperplasia or impairment of micturition since it can precipitate acute urinary retention.
  • In the last three months of pregnancy, the drug is only used when there is no alternative, and only with the lowest dose in a short time. Using furosemide during lactation may cause risk of lactation inhibition. In this case, breast feeding should be discontinued.
  • This drug can cause orthostatic hypotension, headache, so patients should be advised to take precautions to drive or operate machinery.
